Have A “Real” Conversation

Having a conversation could mean so many different things these days. There are phone, text, email, Facebook, Twitter and in-person conversations, plus many more. With all the different forms of conversing going on, how much of it is actual conversation as opposed to noise.

Conversation formalities such as “hi” and “bye” have disappeared. They also can last days and even a couple of weeks, all depending on how quickly we decide to respond. And although we are connecting with each other at greater lengths than ever before, we seem to be lacking and losing the substance that a made a conversation what it was, a conversation. People talking and sharing ideas.

Its like no one has time to sit down and chat with your friends. And for some reason a quick messages seems to suffice. Maybe this is an aspect of the system we grew up in. The “no talking” rule in school or on the job. The sense that when someone is having a conversation it seems that they’re not doing anything. But there actually is so much more going on.

I’m not denying the benefits of our abilities to connect and quickly message someone, but we have to get away from all that and start acting like people again. Who can even imagine a time without text, email and Facebook. It definitely wasn’t to long ago but it feels like ages have gone by.

A quick 5-minute chat could save plenty of time instead of the constant messaging to figure things out. Walking down the hallway to your fellow co-worker seems so much more effective and real. I know we’re all busy these days and I’m not asking you to converse all day. The in-person conversation has a personal, effective, human characteristic to it.

Try it out. Have a real conversation. It could be powerful.
